Yardy over Yanky

Published: Mon Mar 21 2011

The best UK rap records have always been a hybrid of JA/US influences. The beats could be kinda yanky but the dialect was generally better yardy… the style and pattern more natural sounding for obvious reasons. Gary Warnett put us on to this ace ‘UK Ragga Hiphop Mix’ mix from Scary Éire’s DJ Mek which pretty much proves the point.

It also put us in mind of the image above (taken from a vintage issue of The Face). I guess the ‘editorial statement’ in publishing said image is: yes to the Cheivgion goose down and sometimes yes to the pin-tuck (but no to the twin-shank ensemble).

RIP SMILEY CULTURE

Gone but not forgotten.
