Universal Works, Nike, Converse and many, many more…

Published: Thu May 24 2012

Universal Works aren’t Japanese Americana-enthusiasts, they don’t make their clothes in a renovated hot-air balloon and they aren’t the descendants of a long lost Native American tribe. What they are is a top notch garment purveyor from Nottingham helmed by none other than David Keyte. As you’d guess from someone who cut their teeth down the pit, he makes no nonsense garb that should hold up to a bit of rough and tumble. As well as the classic Bakers Jacket and a great reversible sweatshirt, we’ve just received some slightly more summer friendly pieces like fresh Henley shirts, a Hamburglar-esque Breton shirt and some angling delights in the shape of a fishing vest and a bucket hat. Universal Works, the South Manchester Angling Association salute you.

Next on the list of new arrivals — more new trainers from the Big Swoosh themselves. Yep, Nike just keep on digging up those gems, this time it’s the Air Epic getting the vintage treatment. Originally released in 1985, the Air Epic is a super-sharp track trainer with the added ‘yeah I’ve had these for ages’ factor of some tastefully yellowed soles.

Staying in the sports-hall for a minute, how about Converse eh? Worn by everyone from moody-teens to cool-dads, the ol’ Chuck Taylor All Star are a real classic case of sportswear seeping in to civvy-wear, and for good reason, they’re comfy, look sharp and don’t break the bank. But there’s more to Converse than Chuck Taylors — designed in 1935 by Canadian badminton supremo and all-round shuttlecock shaman, Jack Purcell, the Converse Jack Purcell sneakers with their signature grinning toe-cap are perfect for a bit of summer lawn action.
